Loren L. Wharton, Feb. 8, 1988, Headquarters, transportation engineer. Loren stopped on his way to work to warn other drivers of a multiple vehicle crash. While directing traffic from a bridge abutment over the US 101 off ramp, a truck sped by, causing Loren to fall to his death on the roadway below.
